What is Goal Based Intervention (GBI) and how does it work?

What is GBI?

Goal Based Intervention (GBI), is a flexible therapeutic approach that helps children aged six plus and young people improve their emotional wellbeing, build resilience and develop practical coping strategies. It draws on a range of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).

GBI is commonly used to support people experiencing challenges such as low mood, depression and anxiety. Sessions are tailored to each person’s needs and personal goals. As a highly flexible, practical and solution-focused talking therapy, GBI empowers individuals to understand their emotions, strengthen coping skills and make meaningful progress in areas that matter to them.

What is the difference between GBI and CBT?

GBI and CBT share similarities, especially in the types of skills and exercises clinicians may introduce. However:

CBT follows a structured, evidence-based model focused on understanding the links between thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

GBI may include elements of CBT, however GBI clinicians also draw on other therapeutic approaches where beneficial, creating a flexible and personalised blend of strategies. GBI is a focused approach, supporting you to make steps towards your goals, and therefore is typically offered over a shorter number of sessions.

How do people access GBI at Healios?

Healios is an experienced provider of online mental health support, including online GBI, for children aged six plus and young people. Our clinicians work in partnership with NHS services across the UK, including CAMHS.

Most individuals access GBI at Healios following a referral from their local service. Some people who complete a mental health assessment with Healios may also be recommended for GBI as part of their care plan.

Once a referral is received, our team will contact you to explain the next steps and arrange an appointment.

How does online GBI work at Healios?

All sessions at Healios are delivered online by experienced clinicians using our digital platform, Panacea. This allows individuals to receive support from a space that feels safe and comfortable, without the need to travel to clinical appointments. Through Panacea, people can join video sessions, view written notes, manage appointments and involve supportive family members or caregivers where appropriate.

GBI sessions usually take place weekly, with each session lasting around 50 minutes. During the first appointment, the clinician will get to know the individual and explore their current challenges. They will also explain what GBI involves and how it may be helpful.

AsGBI is centred around achievable goals, the clinician will work with the individual (and their family where appropriate) to agree on one or two  meaningful goals to work towards. These goals help guide the focus of the work.

Every session is fully personalised. Clinicians use a variety of on-screen tools and exercises that may cover topics such as understanding emotions, building coping strategies, improving routines, managing sleep or developing problem-solving skills. Goals are reviewed regularly to ensure sessions remain focused and relevant.

When sessions come to an end, the child or young person will receive a personalised health and wellbeing plan and information about further support available in their area.

GBI offers a practical, empowering approach to mental health support and can help people build confidence, develop new skills and navigate everyday challenges in healthier ways. If you or your child has been referred for GBI and you have any questions, please get in touch using the Contact us button below. Our team will be happy to help.
